Do you know where your backups are?

I'm sure you remember the Public Service Announcements that aired from the 1950's to the 1980's "Do you know where your children are?"  At OGsys, we'd like for you to consider this important PSA: Do you know where your backups are?

Our technical and customer support teams are constantly stressing the importance of backing up your OGsql data on a regular basis.  Oftentimes we outline the process of backing up, but we neglect to stress the importance of where you store your backups.  Here are our thoughts regarding storing and protecting your backups:

If you are using an on-premise backup solution, we recommend rotating a set of backups off-site once a week or once a month depending on your company’s needs.  Store them in a secure location, such as a safe deposit box. Another method is to follow the "2x2x2" rule: two sets of backups held by two people at two different locations.

If your area is susceptible to natural disasters, you might want to think about going a step further. You need to make sure your local and remote backup solutions won't be hit by the same disaster that damages your office.  If you're storing your backups in the same city as your office computers, there's a danger that one catastrophe will destroy both.

Although it may sound overly cautious, you will be glad to have a system like this in place should disaster strike.  The Disaster Recovery Preparedness Council estimates that 51% of Organizations are at risk of failing to recover from data loss due to unpreparedness.  We want to make sure you are not in the 51%.
